Whitepaper Foundations
The seven DEEP-tier sub-docs that ground the ZAO Fractal Whitepaper (the “magnum opus”). Each sub-doc is a chapter-foundation for the whitepaper, sourced from 250+ external + internal sources across all seven dimensions.
Originally dispatched as doc 718 in ZAO’s research library, this set is the most-load-bearing prep work for the whitepaper. Read these before drafting any chapter.
Files
| # | File | Whitepaper chapter it feeds | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| - | README.md | n/a | The dispatch hub - outlines all 7 sub-docs + proposed 11-chapter whitepaper structure |
| 01 | 01-theory-foundations.md | Ch. 3 First Principles | Larimer’s argument, rational ignorance, sortition history (Athens through modern citizens’ assemblies), academic deliberative democracy (Fishkin, Landemore, Habermas), measurement theory frame |
| 02 | 02-respect-game-mechanism.md | Ch. 5 The Respect Game | Six-phase weekly session, Fibonacci math (standard 55/34/21/13/8/5 + ZAO’s 2x 110/68/42/26/16/10), 2% weekly decay (34-week half-life, R_eq = earned/0.02), Gini ~0.23, 2/3 consensus gate, 5-layer Sybil/collusion defense |
| 03 | 03-ordao-onchain-architecture.md | Ch. 6 On-Chain Architecture | OREC’s three-phase cycle (voting / veto / execution), yesWeight > 2x noWeight passing formula, soulbound enforcement (ERC-20 + ERC-1155), ZAO’s contract addresses on Optimism |
| 04 | 04-comparative-dao-governance.md | Ch. 7 Why Fractal | Fractal vs token-weighted, quadratic, conviction, Nouns, Moloch, Optimism Collective bicameral. 9-category comparison; honest read on where each wins/loses |
| 05 | 05-critiques-failure-modes.md | Ch. 9 Limitations & Open Problems | Participation collapse, visibility bias, cold start, operating-core concentration (the 2-wallet OREC), unproven nested-fractal scaling past dozens. The honest chapter that earns credibility |
| 06 | 06-whitepaper-craft.md | Document structure + voice | What makes a canonical governance document (drawn from Fractally, Optimism Constitution, ENS, Nouns, MakerDAO, Vitalik). The hybrid manifesto-spec recommendation |
| 07 | 07-zao-fractal-distinctness.md | Ch. 8 The ZAO Fractal | ZAO’s specific story: 100+ unbroken weeks, only music-focused fractal, only active Optimism fractal, only fractal embedded in a social client (ZAO OS on Farcaster), 2x-Fibonacci scoring, five music-community voting criteria |
How to use
When drafting a whitepaper chapter, open the corresponding sub-doc and pull:
- The argument structure (each sub-doc opens with Key Findings, then walks through them)
- Specific numbers (every claim has a date, percentage, or contract address)
- Direct quotations (every primary source quote is attributed)
- The “For the Whitepaper” sections (where present, they distill the source material into chapter-ready paragraphs)
Source provenance
These docs were dispatched by Zaal in May 2026 as preparation for the ZAO Fractal Whitepaper. Each sub-doc was researched DEEP-tier (10+ sources minimum, source classification, primary URL verification). The set was imported here from the ZAO OS V1 research library so the ZAOfractal repo has the full foundation in one place.

Open questions to resolve before writing
These belong to Zaal, not to a research doc:
- Whitepaper, or whitepaper plus constitution? Decide the form (sub-doc 06 discusses both).
- Audience. ZAO members, the wider DAO/governance world, partners, or all three? Changes the voice.
- How much math on the page. Sub-doc 02’s Fibonacci + decay math can be in-line or in an appendix.
- Voice. Manifesto, academic, or the 06 hybrid. Brainstorm with Zaal.
