03 - Eden on EOS (April 2021)
What it was
The first practical fractal democracy implementation. Eden on EOS launched in April 2021 - built by Daniel Larimer’s team - to test the theory of More Equal Animals against a real community on real infrastructure.
It was election-based, not weekly-game-based. The Respect Game (the weekly ritual that every downstream fractal now uses) came later, with Genesis Fractal.

How Eden elections worked
- All participating members get randomly assigned to Zoom breakout rooms of 5-10 people.
- Each group discusses and selects a representative by consensus.
- Representatives form new groups and repeat.
- Process continues through 3-4 rounds until final delegates emerge.
- Final delegates have authority to allocate community funds.
This is sortition + nested representation, exactly as Larimer’s theory called for. The election was held quarterly, not weekly.
What went right
The process worked. Participants reported genuine enjoyment. The small-group format produced real deliberation and human connection rather than the apathy of large-group voting. Eden funded grants, supported public goods, and demonstrated democratic resource allocation could function on-chain.
What went wrong
EOS itself declined. The ecosystem shrank, funding dried up, and Larimer moved on to build Fractally (which then itself stalled). The community that cared about the governance innovation rather than the chain needed a new home.
That migration led to Genesis Fractal (2022) - a 30-week experiment that introduced the weekly Respect Game as a complement to quarterly elections - and then to Eden Fractal proper (May 2022), which has run continuously since.
Why this matters for ZAO
Eden on EOS is the proof-of-concept that fractal governance can run on a real blockchain with a real community of hundreds. It is also the proof that a fractal community can outlive the chain it was born on - the membership and the ideas migrated through Genesis Fractal, into Eden Fractal on EOS, and finally into Eden Fractal on Base in June 2025.
ZAO Fractal sits at the end of that lineage. It is the latest chapter in a five-year continuous experiment that began with 182 people pressing “vote” on EOS in October 2021.
