04 - Genesis Fractal (2022)
What it was
A 30-week experimental fractal community that ran in 2022 to refine the Fractally Respect Game between Eden on EOS (election-based) and Eden Fractal proper (weekly-game-based).
Genesis Fractal is the missing link. Eden on EOS proved a fractal community could exist. Genesis Fractal proved the weekly Respect Game worked as a complement to elections. Without Genesis, Eden Fractal would not have launched in the form it did, and Eden Fractal is the parent of every fractal alive today.

What it tested
Quarterly elections worked but were slow. Genesis Fractal asked: what if the small-group ranking ritual happens every week, and the output is a soulbound reputation token rather than an elected delegate?
The experiment found:
- People kept coming back. Weekly cadence created momentum and community identity that quarterly elections never did.
- Peer ranking on a Fibonacci curve felt fair to participants. Top earners were not resented; bottom-ranked members did not quit.
- 6-person groups produced rich enough discussion to differentiate contributions; smaller groups felt thin, larger groups felt rushed.
- A 30-week run accumulated a meaningful Respect ledger that could - in theory - feed into governance weight downstream.
Why this matters for ZAO
The weekly cadence that ZAO Fractal has now run for 100+ continuous weeks was first proven viable by Genesis Fractal in 2022. ZAO did not invent the Monday-night ritual. ZAO inherited it from Fractally, via Genesis Fractal, via Eden Fractal.
What ZAO contributed is longevity (no other fractal has run weekly this long without pause), focus (the first music-and-culture fractal), and embedding (the first fractal living inside a full social client - ZAO OS on Farcaster).
Dan SingJoy - who placed 3rd in Genesis Fractal - went on to found Eden Fractal in May 2022 and later Optimism Fractal in October 2023. He remains the bridge figure between Larimer’s theory, the live communities, and ZAO. See 11-key-people.md.
Status today
Concluded. Genesis Fractal was always a 30-week experiment, not a permanent community. Its participants - led by Dan SingJoy - rolled into Eden Fractal in May 2022, which is the same community-thread that now runs as Eden Fractal Epoch 2 on Base. See 05-eden-fractal.md.
